Our Underground Motel was the first underground motel to be built in Coober Pedy back in 1984, with all rooms being dug into a sandstone hill. The 'dug-out' rooms are sympathetic with the arid desert environment conditions making them the perfect place to stay whilst exploring the sites of this opal mining frontier town.

Unique Accommodation
Built in 1984, being the first underground accommodation of its kind in Coober Pedy, our motel has since been upgraded and renovated to create very comfortable rooms with a unique individual style sympathetic with the arid desert environment. With wide shady verandas, an outstanding, elevated location with fantastic views over the desert landscape, the Stuart Rangers and 'The Breakaways', our Quirky Accommodation provides a welcome resting place after days on the road or exploring the area.
Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 kilometres (525 miles) north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. A fascinating community with most residents living in unique underground homes, it is definitely worth exploring.
Underground shops, restaurants, bars and galleries as well as the chance to explore old opal mines, and the surrounding desert landscapes, makes Coober Pedy and our unique underground accommodation, a must stop place on any tour of south and central Australia. Soak up the history and ambiance of this remote frontier mining town, try your luck at opal mining or spend some time chatting with the local characters - this is outback Australia at its finest!
Location and Attractions
Coober Pedy has over 70 opal fields and is the largest opal mining area in the world. Consider a visit to The Old Timers Mine, a Coober Pedy award-winning attraction. The Underground Pottery and the towns 'grassless' golf course are well worth a visit.
Located a little over 30km north of Coober Pedy, the Breakaways are a striking rocky landscape of flat-toped mesas, best viewed at sunset to appreciate the glorious sandstone colours.
Approximately 15kms (9.3 miles) north-east of Coober Pedy is the Moon Plain, an unusual lunar landscape that has appeared in films such as Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome and Pricilla Queen of the Desert.

On 07 June the Australian Government issued an updated travel warning for East Timor strongly advising against travel to East Timor because of the extremely dangerous security situation. Australians in the country are advised to leave. The Travel Warning remains at Category 5 - Do Not Travel.
On Tuesday 07 June we have taken the decision to cancel the remainder of our East Timor trips scheduled to depart in 2006. All travellers will be notified and given the opportunity to transfer to another trip or obtain a full refund (land content only). We very much regret having to take this action and our thoughts and sympathies are with the people of East Timor during this troubled time.
We are confident of being able to resume our normal schedule of trips to East Timor in 2007 and hope that those travellers who have had to cancel their plans this year will travel with us to East Timor in 2007.
